Hālau Haʻa Kea o Kinohi
Hālau Ha'a Kea o Kinohi is a traditional hālau hula located in Keaukaha, HI. This Hālau was established by Kumu Hula Nui Paul K. Neves. The kuleana of this hālau now rests with Kumu Hula Kinohi, Kumu Hula Kimo, and Kumu Hula Nāmaka. Our colors are red, black, and white. Red represents the passion of Pele and the connection to the lehua blossom. Black represents sacredness, the Kumulipo (our origin story), and the connection to our kūpuna/ancestors. White ("Kea") represents many things. Beyond just the connection of Kea to one of the 3 hālau colors, Kea also connects our hālau to one of the most sacred mountains in the Hawaiian islands, located on Hawaiʻi island, named “Mauna Kea.” Kea also connects the hālau to our hula teacher, Kumu Nui Paul K. Neves, being that Kea was the last name of Kumu Nui Paulʻs grandfather, John Louis Kea Manō. Along with the definition of the color white, Kea also refers to the idea of seeing clearly and having thoughts and ideas that are clearly laid out. The word “Keʻokeʻo” also translates to both the color white and to see clearly. We have such pride to include the color white within our hālau ranks, which is also another definition of Keʻokeʻo.
